They’re talking

They’re talking and they
Don’t happen to care until, well
Until happen becomes long gone,
happened, happened already,
and at some point:
Will happen again.
Again.

At the cash register, two figures
Stand with their backs to you; at some
Point, maybe an hour ago, you were
All holding hands and talking Pillows
Talking Blankets; they’re gripping each
Others elbows, the skin above shriveled
With their grasp; and you stand with
Two twenty dollar bills.
They can’t pay.
You happened.

They’re talking and they don’t
Think, because your throat is shoved
With fantasies and twenty dollar bills;
Happenings and happendings, from
The flickering LED lights, and they
Turn to you: “we’re glad you came,”
Like butlers trained to please,
But you know what mask they wear
(You have worn it yourself,
Who hasn’t?)

& tho you put it on right back:
“Thx”
No one
Not you not them not
Twenty dollar bills or happenings
Will happens have happened —
Believes it.
