too

we used to call each other too ends
of the same string; and you said,
“we’ll tie ourselves up someday.
twogether, because no knot is made
without knowing how things choke and
come together,” and you said, “it’s
a euphemism for absolutely nothing
here,”
and i repeated,
“knots for nothing.”
and i said,
“knothing.”
and you laughed.

six loops were made before we
found that knots can tie
laces tie ribbons,
tie sticks together and tie ties,
tie tights and tie lives.
we did not realize that six knots
meant something untieable, to;

choking is a hand to a neck
and we come together breathless.
who’s choking whose string?
who’s wrangling whose wrist until
we’re no longer too, just one hand
and one limp one then eventually
WHOSE HAND DROPS FIRST?

i bet you’re wondering,
to.
two.
too.
